Gambling Psychology

 by Brian Osborne

Gambling psychology for most people conjures up images of stony faced poker players and their habits and actions (tells) that suggest the value of the cards they are holding.

I contend that there is much more to gambling psychology. When we look at successful gamblers, they all have a sound money management strategy, a sound game strategy, a high level of game skills, distinctive presentation and when appropriate, the ability to psyche their opponents.

You may contend that that some of these aspects of gambling do not involve psychology. I disagree.

The sound money management strategy allows the successful gambler to recover from a number of consecutive loosing gambling sessions. Especially in poker, opponents notice these things and the ability to bounce back has a subtle psychological effect on opponents. This also allows you to approach the next session in a better frame of mind than what you would otherwise be in because you know that if you should loose again, you still have adequate reserves to try again multiple times.

Without a sound game strategy you will be taken to the cleaners regardless of the game you play or where you play it. A sound strategy simply requires you to play the game to take advantage of all the favorable bets and to avoid those bets where the house has an unreasonable advantage.

This allows you to play with confidence because once your strategy has been tested and proven, you know that when you win, your winnings will be reasonable to quite good and on those occasions when you loose, your losses will be relatively modest.

Your game skills give you the confidence to adhere to your strategies when under pressure so that you maximize your winnings and minimize your losses. If your game stresses you unduly, either find a game with lower limits or a different game that you find less stressful. If that is not possible, then it is time to find another past time.

Your distinctive presentation sends a message to your opponents. That message is dependant on where and with whom you play. Many years ago, I worked as a ringer (cowboy) and long wearing western shirts, jeans and polished riding boots have been both my preferred work and casual wear ever since. In the city, that gives me the image of a hay seed (hillbilly). At the poker tables, that's great because most of those who do not know me personally will tend to assess me as an inexperienced and poor player.

To me these are the unnoticed aspects of gambling psychology that all combine to build your personal confidence and allow you to exude confidence during your gambling session.

Virtually everyone has heard about poker "tells" even if they do not really know what they are. Tells are the subtle signs that others pick up on that give them a good idea as to the strength of our poker hand. Hiding these tells from your opponents, requires a great deal of acting skills and practice especially when you suddenly find yourself sitting on a good full house or a royal flush.

I recall playing against this stony faced guy who hardly moved or spoke for hours when suddenly the artery on the side of his neck started jumping like he had just run a marathon. He obviously had a hand that he found very exciting. Whilst he could control his voluntary actions, he could not control his involuntary actions. All those who could see that side of his neck folded in turn. If he had come dressed as 'dandy' complete with a cravat, no one may have noticed his obvious excitement and his pot would have been much bigger.

This incident vividly illustrates the visible aspects of gambling psychology.

Lastly, I thought I should do some research to see what the experts have to say about gambling psychology. After a few hours, of reading those papers, the overwhelming thrust was that we were all exhibiting the early signs of abnormal behavioral patterns and if caught early, the problem could respond to treatment. Unfortunately, there are some in our midst where gambling has become a problem.

I make a point of never gambling when cash is short because it has been my sad experience that whenever I have gambled in those situations, I have almost always lost and such losses are doubly painful. I have always won most whenever I could well and truly have afforded the loss. Being cashed up removes the stress and reduces the mistakes one makes when playing overly cautiously.

To the intelligent gamblers in our midst who have sound strategies in place and who never bet more than they can afford to loose, I say work on the psychological aspects of your game to improbe your edge and Good Luck at the Tables!

About the Author

Brian Osborne is the webmaster at http://wwww.winnersrun.com a website focusing on Gambling Strategy

The odds remain the same there 50 50.

This is the fundamental flaw with any roulette system:

If past data is of no use in predicting the future a mathematical system cannot be applied.

Roulette systems play long enough and you will win in the end.

Some roulette systems work on the logic of increasing bet size after a losing bet until you win. This is referred to as a negative progression System.

The logic behind this type of betting system is it assumes that in every session, the player will be able to leave on a win, if he plays long enough.

The most well known of these systems is the Martingale system.

In theory it sounds fine, but in practice it can be very expensive and does not work, unless you have unlimited bankroll.

Regardless of this a player would lose over time anyway but, the casino gives itself protection by restricting the number of consecutive bets on all roulette tables.

Roulette systems increase bet size when you are hot

Another method roulette system method of betting is referred to as positive progression or more commonly referred to as pyramiding, or letting a profit ride.

Players gamble more aggressively with money they have won, in order to win bigger paybacks.

The downside of these systems remains, the player needs to keep winning and the odds are always against this.

In our view if you have made some money bank it.

You can never beat the house edge The house edge is there before a player applies a roulette system and it is there after he applies a roulette system.

This house edge means that over the longer term the house will make money.

The player may have periods where they can be up, but the odds are in favor of the casino longer term and the player is always destined to lose over time.

This applies to any game of chance. There is no way the house can lose and there is no point in trying to beat something you mathematically can't and this includes using roulette systems.

Roulette put things in perspective

If you want to make money the answer is no, as card games such as blackjack and poker offer you a far better chance of success.

If on the other hand if you want a fun, exciting game for entertainment, then roulette has a lot to offer and incidentally the odds are not as bad as people think, if you know how to bet.

About the Author

More on roulette and other casino games

for more on roulette systems and how to get the best odds in all casino games visit:

www.net-planet.org/gaming.html.

Buying Poker Chips Clay, Custom, And Casino Chip Sets
by J Finney

If you're in the market for poker chips, it's a good idea to get the chip which best suits your needs. Poker chips come in varying weights and are made from different types of materials. The intended use should be the primary factor taken into consideration while making your poker chip purchase.

Poker chips come in different sizes which are measured by weight in grams. The most popular chip used in casinos is the 11.5 gram chips which are 39mm in diameter. These poker chips are used for their pleasing weight and size, plus they are not the most expensive poker chips on the block. With the amount of handling and abuse poker chips suffer, casinos would rather not shell out the extra money for the most expensive poker chips.

Actually, who could blame the casinos for wanting to reduce the costs involved in keeping an item which can be put in the players pocket and taken from the casino? Collecting poker chips is growing in popularity, so logically the amount of poker chips leaving the casino premises would also be on the rise.

If you're in the market for a regular game night with your friends type of chip, you may want to go with a less expensive poker chip yourself. If that is the case, then you have the option of going with the low budget ABS plastic poker chip. If you're intent is to impress your friends, or have a local charity poker night gala, then you may opt for the next step up the ladder which is the mother-of-pearl chip. The mother-of-pearl chips are also referred to as ‘plaques'.

The clay chip is next in line, and most of them are made of ABS plastic with a metal insert to give it an extra bit of weight, which makes for a more pleasant feel to the hand. Some clay poker chips are made of a ‘clay composite', and are what is currently considered to be the top of the line in poker chips.

A new poker chip to make it on the scene is called ‘Nexgen', which is made up of a type of clay composite material with a metal insert added to give it a weight of either 13gm or 15gm. It is yet to be seen whether this new poker chip will become the next favorite among avid poker players, or become the new choice for casinos.

You can purchase poker chips at novelty stores, online auctions, casinos and online gaming and hobby stores. Of course the price you pay for your poker chips will depend on the type of chips you choose, and the vendor. Before buying any of the higher end poker chips you should always do your research, and also ask other poker players where they purchase their poker chips.

About The Author:
Read online poker room reviews at http://www.poker-reviews-online.com and get caught up on the latest poker tournament news at http://www.poker-weblog.com.

Best Online Poker Rooms Reviewed: Free Tips For Players

by J Finney

Finding a good place to play poker is a must. If one is to play online for large stakes then they are going to want to find a poker room that's going to deal them decent hands when it counts. Some poker sites constantly deal crappy hands that can keep a player down on his luck.

Paradise Poker is a great online poker room. Some people know this site as the "World's Premier Online card room", On this site there are constantly tournaments going on and a player will always find some high stakes game to enter. People have mentioned that this game has the most pleasing graphics and yet it is not crowded with all sorts of unnecessary icons. For those players worried about the security of their money, Paradise Poker has shuffle card reviews from a highly recommended company, Pricewaterhouse Coopers.

Poker Stars never have a time where there is not a large tournament going on that anyone can enter. Popular with most of the free roll players, the site offers some enjoyable aspects to the programming. Although the site, itself can appear rather chaotic with the extensive graphics that people can use as their icons.

Ultimate Bet may not have the financial status to back it up, but it certainly has a few well-known players such as Annie Duke, Russ Hamilton and Phil Hellmuth. One great aspect about this room is that it includes a rather nice feature where players can minimize their gaming table on the screen, allowing them to play multiple tables easier.

Most of the time, Ladbrokes has encounters worth watching, and for added reliability they are connected with the Hilton Group. Sponsoring a huge tournament in Europe where they don't accept US players is an annual competition known as the Ladbrokes Poker Tournament. Although the software is nothing extraordinary, it can still provide one with hours of poker entertainment.

Poker Room has a variety of options. Of those include multi-table tournaments, as well as Texas Hold'em, 7 Card Stud, Omaha, Hold ‘em as well as a host of other casino games. For those players worried about viruses, don't be, there isn't a download is needed to game on Poker Room. With the addition of a good links section, players are allowed to play a free roll with play money, which includes tournaments.

Prima Poker is more of a group of poker sites rather than a single room and boasts a minimal wait time before a game is available. With twenty-one sites from which they use to collect players for a game, it doesn't matter where you connected to the site from, there will be a game started.

Full Tilt is another great online poker site. Although the graphics may appear slightly childish, Full Tilt's interface can be a lot of fun, especially if the cards aren't flopping your way. With Team Full Tilt, this site boasts some of the best players in the game, including Erik Seidel, Jennifer Harman, Howard Lederer, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Phil Ivey this site has earned its bragging rights.

Relatively new to the scene is Hollywood Poker. Unlike any other site, Hollywood Poker allows players to game along side some of their favorite actors including James Woods, the official spokesperson. The graphics aren't anything special; however, they do offer a cornucopia of options allowing players to maximize their experience.

About The Author:
Visit http://www.poker-reviews-online.com/ for online poker room reviews and http://www.poker-weblog.com/ for poker tournament news.

Copyright J Finney - http://www.poker-weblog.com/

5 Texas Holdem Tips!

by James Obrian

Texas hold Em tips!

Texas Holdem Tip #1

Don't Fall In Love With Your Start

Another very hard lesson to learn. Who doesn't find it nearly impossible to fold two queens, or AKs? Or even a pair of tens? Who doesn't hate the idea of folding on the turn after flopping two pair? Or a set? Everyone wants to see these great starts to the river. Problem is, there are other people in the game. Though it may make your eyes light up when you get top pocket cards, or have three of a kind after the flop, these hands are no guarantee of winning. Failing to re-evaluate the strength of your hand at every step of the way is a sure way to lose a lot of money.

Texas Holdem Tip #2

Stop To Think

Too often players act without thinking, getting carried away by emotion instead of considering a bet calmly and rationally. This happens especially in live poker, where you may feel vaguely defined urges not to "be a coward," "take a shot," or "to go big." These urges often are setting you up to lose. Texas holdem tip always, when confronted with a big decision, pause to review your reaction, your instinct. Very often our natural instincts need to be rerouted into poker instincts. For the beginner, this process involves a full stop, and an open-minded consideration of the situation. Good players feed on the "natural reactions" of the less skilled. So don't react. Think.

Texas Holdem Tip #3

Consider The Pot

Something I often see, but will never understand, is players using all-in bluffs to win tiny pots. This, to me, is the height of bad poker playing. Pot odds are a huge part of the game. When you're taking a risk, you want to be entirely sure you'll be justly rewarded for it. That's why some players can make a living at holdem. They know the odds, and know consistently staying in on gigantic pots, and quickly giving up small pots, will pay off in the end. This concept is closely tied to expected value (EV). These good players may lose the big pot nine out of ten times, but the tenth time more than pays for the other losses. Factor the current and potential size of the pot into every decision you make.

Texas Holdem Tip #4

Strong Players Bet Big On BIG Hands

This is why they're strong players. If you've made your hand, and are up against a tight player who's raising you big, take a good look at the board. Possible flush, straight, full house? Chances are she's hit something. The best players bet big when chances are very slim that they can be beat. This means you should very often take their implicit advice and get out--especially as a beginner. Unless you've got the nuts, or near it, yourself, that is. In that case, raise the hell out of them.

Texas Holdem Tip #5

Be A Rock, Except...

This is the best texas holdem tip I can give you. Being a rock is a very good way to start out. Though it may seem unexciting to some, who long for the high-stakes stack-pushing (highly edited) drama of the TV-poker world, poker is a game of inches. A waiting game. Throwing 80% of your hands, at least, is the only way to win in multi-player games. Bet only on the best hands, semi-bluff very occasionally, and bluff almost never. This is a winning recipe against 90% of the poker players you'll meet at low-limit tables. As a beginner, consider yourself a hunter sitting calmly in a blind, waiting hours for prey to fly overhead. If you go the other way, take your shotgun and go walking around in the jungle, very often you'll get eaten by a lion.

About the Author

James O'Brian is a writer and a avid texas holdem player. The player can, take up to five new cards or keep any he has.

The player keeps the cards they want to keep by hitting the "hold" button that corresponds to the individual card shown.

When the choice is made the player presses the "play" button, and the cards discarded are replaced by new ones.

The result of the game is determined by the outcome after the final hand is dealt.

4 simple to tips to win big!

Here are only four tips for winning at video poker and then you're all set, to have fun and have the odds in your favor

Tip 1 - Get the best odds of success from the start

Video poker machines are based upon a 52 card deck and there are 2,598,960 possible hands combinations.

The programme in a video poker machine is programmed to simulate the probabilities of drawing any combination from the deck.

Because this is a set probability, casinos adjust the pay tables to produce the house edge. The payouts for all video poker machines are the same except for the payout on the flush, full house or royal flush.

This means playing the highest paying machines as this puts the odds in your favor

Here are comparisons of payouts on a jacks-or-better machine. Payout Payout with Strategy 9 for a full house 6 for a flush 99.5% 8 for a full house 5 for a flush 97.4% 7 for a full house 5 for a flush 96.3% etc

A 9 / 6 machine will hit a royal flush around once every 40,000 hands. The 8 / 5 odds are once every 45,000 hands so you need to play machines with best payout

Tip 2 - Play maximum coins.

If you bet five coins, all winning hands are paid out by a factor of five, except for the royal flush. This is a bonus amount designed as an incentive to play five coins. If a player plays less than maximum coins then they won't win a Royal Flush and can't win at video poker longer term.

Tip 3 - You need to play for a long time

A player, on the 9 / 6 machine, has odds of 1:40,000 of getting a Royal Flush, or equivalent to around 100 hours of play. You need to play any Video poker machine until you win a Royal Flush to emerge ahead

Your bankroll comes from your own resources, or by collecting money from the intermediate hands that give you income along the way.

Winning at video poker does not mean playing for the odd hour! You need to play for a long time and be patient.

Tip 4 - playing with a strategy.

If you want to increase your chances of winning at video poker, play with a strategy. There are slight differences between games and different strategy cards need to be used, but their all easy to learn.

There are plenty of free strategy cards on the internet. Simply, print one and keep it for reference and refer to if you need to.

So, there are the 4 tips, use them and good luck in your quest for consistent jackpots.

About the Author

Further casino game tips and strategies

For further information on winning at video poker, as well as tips and strategies, on all major casino games visit:

http://www.net-planet.org/gaming.html

Well It Probably Won't Make You Rich! by sacha tarkovsky

Can you make a lot of money using basic strategy and blakcjack card counting?

If you think about it, the odds are not as good as they may seem.

Here's why..

Basic Strategy

The house edge can be diminished to just less than 1%, if the player uses basic strategy.

Blackjack card counting is then supposed to put the odds really in favor of the player, but does it do it enough to make it worthwhile?

You can play with a small advantage with basic strategy, now lets look how much better we can make the odds with blackjack card counting.

The Myth Of Card Counting

Blackjack card counting was introduced by an IBM computer scientist, Edward O. Thorp who published "Beat the Dealer" in 1962.

The book introduced card counting to a global audience and many were attracted to its logic and method.

Essentially the blackjack card counting Thorpe introduced considered the ten-valued cards and the Aces as "positive", and the cards 2 to 6 as "negative". If the net result in the remaining deck was positive, the player must increase the bet size.

The method had visible results when only one deck was used and very few cards remained in the deck.

You won't get rich card counting!

The casinos now use multiple deck blackjack decks which make the number of cards coming out more and the odds of card counting working decline.

Let's make an assumption

That blackjack card counting, realistically CAN give a 1.5 - 2% advantage to the player over, with the advantage of a single deck, so things can only get worse on games with more decks or unfavorable rules.

1.5 - 2% is a narrow margin if you are trying to make a good income out of it, for the effort involved!

Card counting is NOT a predictive theory

The fact is, blackjack card counting is not a predictive theory as many novices believe; it simply tries to crudely calculate the odds of cards coming out of the pack.

There are huge number of permutations of cards coming out, so even if the odds are in your favor, doesn't mean you are going to win! You need to play for a long time for the odds to even themselves out.

Of course, over a long period of time (and I mean long) things will even themselves out, but there will be a lot of ups and downs in between of equity to smooth out.

If you think about it, when the best advantage you can get is up to 2% in a best case scenario, are you going to make enough money to make the effort you put in worthwhile?

Do the maths and figure it out for yourself.

There is not enough room in this article to cover all the mathematics, but it's a lot of effort for a very small return overtime.

Don't waste your time blackjack card counting

If you want to make big money in relation to effort, you need another game where you can increase your advantage to a level where you can earn BIG money and this means competing directly against other players

A better return for the effort

So forget blackjack card counting and learn poker.

Why?

Not only can you calculate odds and have a strategy, you also have a lot of ways to get the better of your opponent through psychological strategy and win big.

keep in mind, you don't even have to have the best hand to win!

Poker presents a better challenge and a better opportunity to win Big Money.

How many rich card counters have you heard of?

If you believe that there are blackjack card counters who have made huge money, search the net and see how many you find with substantiated winnings.

Next, try a search against poker players who have made a fortune and you will see for yourself.

Find out more about casino games and getting a playing edge...

For more on blackjack card counting, tips, strategies and free e-zines on all casino game, go to http://www.net-planet.org/gaming.html

About the Author

Find out more about casino games and getting a playing edge...

For more on blackjack card counting, tips, strategies and free e-zines on all casino game, go to http://www.net-planet.org/gaming.html

Though most are recent neologisms, others date to poker's antiquity. All such slang terms typically connect a common concept (from life experience or storytelling) to the hand, in order to more easily characterize its general status relative to other hands.

Dead Man's Hand: Two pair, aces and eights. This is the hand held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot and killed, and plays a relatively wide cultural role.
Pink, All Pink: Flush of Hearts or Diamonds
Blue, All Blue: Flush of Clubs or Spades
Puppy Feet, Pups: Flush of Clubs
One Jack Off: JJJxx
Four Pips: AAAAx. (Each ace has one pip.)
Harlem Night: Spades with clubs (from the racist term of spade for African-Americans and Harlem’s reputation for violence).

Motown: JJ55x (Jacks and Fives, Jackson Five)
Devil's hand: 666xx (refering to the Number of the Beast in the Book of Revelation)
Wheel: Ace to five low straight, also known as a Bicycle, or "The Name of the Game" in Bicycle.
Steel wheel: Ace-to-five straight flush. So called because it's one of the strongest hands in the game (only beaten by higher straight flushes).
Big Bobtail: An open ended 4 card straight flush.
Boat: Short for Full Boat which means Full House, shorthanded as XXXs full of YYs, such as "Aces full of Jacks" where the hand is AAAJJ.

Klan Rally: Three Kings (KKKxx). Also known as Alabama Night Riders and Three Wise Men
Trips,Set: Three of a kind. The term "set" is usually used with the rank in question: "a set of Xs". In hold 'em games, the term set is used to refer to the situation when the player has three of a kind with a pair in the hole, but not when there is a pair or three of a kind on the board.
Quads,Quartet: Four of a kind. When spoken, either "quad Xs" or "a quartet of Xs" (less common) would be used.

Sometimes, four-of-a-kind is jokingly refered to as "two pair". If the quads are of low rank, they're often called "two small pair." This description is almost always followed by "a pair of red Xs and a pair of black Xs," where X is the rank of the four-of-a-kind.
Two pair is commonly shorthanded as Xs up or Xs over Ys, with the top pair as X and the bottom pair as Y. Martin

Having been a blackjack dealer and gambling instructor, I have taught countless people how to playing the game of Blackjack. The game of Blackjack is a very simple one to learn and you can be on the table playing in just minutes from now. On my main website (WiseBettor.com), I go more in detail about gambling, but this quick start guide will give you everything you need to play a game of Blackjack. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on playing Blackjack online.

Before you can play a hand of Blackjack, you must place a bet on the table. The minimum bet amount required to play depends on the table you are at. All winning bets at the Blackjack table are paid even money, with the exception of a dealt Blackjack, which is paid three to two. If, for example, you have a $5 bet on the table and receive a Blackjack, you would be paid $7.50.

The game starts with you receiving two cards and the dealer receiving two cards. One card of the dealer is placed face up for you to see. This card is called the "up card" and gives you a little help in guessing what the dealer holds. Each card has a count that's equivalent to it's number. So, for example, a two is worth two. The Jack, Queen and King cards are worth ten. The Ace is worth one or eleven--you decide. At the conclusion of each hand the player closest to twenty-one wins. However, the object is not really to get as close to twenty-one as possible, rather to beat the dealer.

As the player, you go first. You can hit, stand, split, double down or surrender. Here's a description of each action.

Stand: You stay with what you have and end your turn.

Hit: You take another card. You can continue to do this until you are satisfied or bust (go over 21).

Split: If you have two cards of the same type (example: two tens), you can split them up and make two separate hands. You can only split your first two cards.

Double Down: When you double down, you double up your bet and take one final card--and end your turn. You can't double down after you have more than two cards.

Surrender: You kill the hand by taking back half of your money and giving up. Most casinos offer this now. You can only surrender when you have your first two cards.

Once your turn ends, the dealer completes the hand by drawing if needed. Most casinos are setup so that the dealer must hit until the dealer holds a 17. If the casino hits on soft 17, that means any 17 made with an ace (example: ace and a six) is hit. A hard 17 would be something like a ten and a seven.

You are now ready to hit the Blackjack table and have some fun. It would be good to read up on some blackjack strategy before playing--to maximize your potential. You will find out some key times to not hit no matter what you have and times to double down. Blackjack is a fun game and the house has a low advantage over you--if you know how to play right.

About the Author

WiseBettor.com is full of articles on gambling, gambling strategies, gambling reviews and more.

If you want original gambling content for your website, visit GamblerContent.com.

A Couch Potato's Guide to Poker on TV! by Paul Bayliss

I love Poker. I love to play it. I love to read about it. I love to watch other people play it, especially on TV. It's an inexpensive way to learn from the pros. You can see what they do in real-world situations, not just what they say they would do in their books. Watching Poker helps improve your game. You can learn pot odds, combinations, order of hands and many other basics as well as advanced, psychological strategy such as tells.

I watch a lot of Poker on TV. Yes, I do. Apparently, the networks are taking notice of the TV-viewing public. A lot of us are crazy for Poker. In this article, I'm going to discuss several, TV series that are still running now, that I highly recommend and regularly watch.

1) Celebrity Poker Showdown. This is on Bravo, usually on Thursday nights. Poker Pro Phil Gordon and comedian Dave Foley (Kids in The Hall, News Radio) are the moderators for this light, fluffy show featuring celebrities such as Alex Trebek, Ben Affleck, Rosie O'Donnell and Camryn Manheim. Some of the celebs are really very good. Of course, there is also that wonderfully evil moment when you can watch someone on the D-List or above sink on the river.

Phil gives expert commentary. There's a short film each week in which the basics of No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em and the betting rules are explained. It's entertaining TV even for newbies, pros and the star-struck alike.

2) The World Series of Poker. ESPN is currently showing episodes of the 2005 WSOP. The other night, I saw Johnny Chan win his record 10th WSOP bracelet in the Pot Limit Hold 'Em event. It was awesome. He beat out Phil 'Unabomber' Laak to take the lead against Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth, who were both present during the match, for the all-time record bracelet wins. Hey, don't feel too bad for Mr. Laak. His girlfriend, the beautiful Hollywood actress, Jennifer Tilly, won the Ladies' Event at the WSOP this year.

A week or two prior to that, I got to see Josh Arieh, a very good player who doesn't get too much airtime (yet), play - and win - the Omaha tourney. It was great to see Omaha Hold 'Em played on TV for a change. I loved it.

Even if you're not a poker junkie like I am, you can appreciate the epic nature of the World Series of Poker with its international field featuring the best of the best - and a few Cinderella stories thrown in for good measure.

3) World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. Travel the world from your chair and watch pros play in the World Poker Tour. They play in exotic locales such as Aruba and Paris. Host Mike Sexton is so knowledgeable about the game that he makes up for his co-host Vince Van Patten's shtick. The man tries to give nicknames to any hand combination possible. Some of his groaners include:

QQ - Siegfried & Roy or Paris & Nikki (Hilton) 55 - Sammy Hagar (after the song, 'I Can't Drive 55')

Rounding out the commentator group is the lovely Shana Hiatt. She interviews the pros and showcases different aspects of the poker-playing lifestyle on each episode. The WPT hosts names like Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer and more. It's a veritable who's who of Poker and it comes fresh and new into your home each week.

These aren't the only Poker shows on TV. ESPN has a drama called TILT starring Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs) and Eddie Cibrian (Third Watch) which is a fictionalized version of a poker pro's dirty and dangerous life.

E! Entertainment Network, beginning on St. Patty's Day 2005, aired several episodes of E!'s Hollywood Hold 'Em Game. Laura Prepon, of That 70s Show, produced the show and starred in one of the episodes with her live-in love Chris Masterson (Malcolm in the Middle) and some friends, including Chris' brother and That 70's show star, Danny Masterson (Hyde). Other episodes had Mila Kunis (Family Guy, That 70s Show), Macauley Culkin - yes, that Macauley Culkin. He's Mila's beau - and Shannon Elizabeth. I haven't seen it on recently; but, I desperately hope that it comes back. It was pretty good poker and Phil Laak was the dealer/mentor/host.

The Game Show Network has Poker Royale. This is a 6-person tournament that runs for several weeks. There are several elimination rounds, then a finale. The first had all pros. It was men vs. women. The men won each individual match; but, the ladies, led by Kathy Liebert, Jennifer Harmon and Cyndy Violette took the final - and decisive match. The second installment had Celebrities vs. Poker Pros. I found it to be a watered-down version of Celebrity Poker Showdown. I missed Phil Gordon and Dave Foley, gotta admit. The third installment, which is currently airing, is the Comedians vs. Poker Pros. I didn't find this one too fun or funny; but, I've had other things to do lately.

Actually, I dropped watching that because the Fall Season picked up; and, well, I'd rather watch the Poker Superstars Invitational on FSN! This is awesome. It's a turbo tourney - the blinds go up really quick and the play is fast - featuring Johnny Chan, Carlos Mortensen and other luminaries. It's action-packed, high-stakes poker that goes by in the blink of eye.

If you can't find a good online or home game, why not sit down and watch one on TV? Chances are - there's one on the television right now. Go. Watch!

About the Author

This article is provided by Real Casinos - to read more articles please visit our gambling articles section.

Depositing Funds to Your Online Casino & Poker Room Account
by: Andrew Denton

Ways To Deposit

When I first wanted to start playing in online casinos and poker rooms, I thought it would be as easy as 123 to start playing – surely all you need to do is to download the software enter your credit card details and away you go?

Well yes kind of, but you may already have seen there are a multitude of different payment and deposit methods available ranging from credit and debit cards right the way through to the good old snail mail check!

There are a range of options but it is vitally important that you choose the right one otherwise your casino and poker play may not be as rewarding as you first think.

Credit Cards

Historically credit cards have always been the first thing people think of when looking to deposit money – and why not – these days most of the major banks offer internet fraud protection and depositing via credit card is pretty instantaneous – so what is the problem – well there could be a few.

1, A lot of US credit card issuers now will not allow you to use their cards for gambling transactions, this is also now starting to hit the rest of the world with other big issuers.

2, Mastercard now prohibit winnings from being re deposited back onto cards bearing their logo.

3, Some banks both in the US and UK who do allow their credit cards to be used to deposit money, account for these transactions slightly differently and as a result charge interest differently usually with no interest free period and certainly in the UK with interest rates in excess of 21% AER.

4, There may also be limits with some online casinos and online poker rooms on the amount of money you can deposit and have re deposited back onto your card so if you win big you may not get it all back!

Debit Cards

Now becoming more standardised around the world but used heavily in the UK and Europe, don’t tend to suffer the same restrictions as credit cards and of course because the money is coming directly out of your bank account – unless you have an overdraft facility you are not exposed to the excessive interest rates associated with credit cards.

Bank Transfers

Still used a lot to make payments for bills etc, one of the biggest issues with bank transfers is the time – funds are not moved immediately so you often have to wait before you can use your gaming account for anything upto five days – during which lets be honest the banks will be earning some interest off your money, and at the same time the banks will charge you for the privilege of transferring your money this way.

Online Payment Services

I guess Paypal may well have started this trend off but now there are a whole host of online payment services to choose from (Paypal incidentally not being one of them as when they were took over by Ebay they stopped allowing Paypal to be used for casino transactions)

The best known ones are Neteller, Moneybookers, Western Union & Stormpay but there are others such as Citadel.

All pretty much offer a similar service in that you open an account with them – for free and you can then deposit money into them using either a credit or debit card or by wire transfer etc, once you have deposited money into them you can then use this account to deposit and withdraw funds from your online casino or poker room account – in most cases immediately.

All have a range of different services attached to them and, obviously they have to make there money somewhere, a range of different charges – as an example I deposited £25 into my Neteller account from my UK credit card and was charged a 98p handling fee by Neteller – which was taken directly off the credit card – approx 4% charge which is quite a lot especially if you are depositing large amounts into the account.

However one of the main advantages of using services such as this is that you can accept money and deposit money in different currencies – all converted at the payment services conversion rates and you can use one account to fund a range of different casino and poker accounts – and of course one account to receive all of your winnings!

One final word of caution on this though – when using your credit card to deposit funds into your payment service account just check with your card issuer that they do not treat these deposits in the same way as they would treat a deposit to a casino and sting you with high rates of interest on the transaction.

Snail Mail Methods

Need I say anything – if you really don’t want to use any of the above or you are scared about leaving your details on the internet then you can always send a good old cheque (check!) and wait for it to clear – some (not all) online casinos and poker rooms accept this method.

Conclusion

There are a myriad of different ways for you to enjoy your online gaming and deposit and withdraw money safely, if you do struggle to use your credit card then one piece of advice which the banks would kill me for saying is to balance transfer the money off your credit card into your bank account then use your debit card to deposit the funds (thus avoiding the hefty interest charges) – be careful though for balance transfer fees but this is a whole different article!

About The Author

Andy Denton runs a number of websites including one specifically on poker strategy and poker site reviews - http://www.haveaflutter.com and has extensive experience in the financial services industry.

This article may only be reproduced if a link is retained back to haveaflutter.com

Free American Roulette Game Glossary
by: J Finney

Learning the “lingo” used in American Roulette will help make you familiar with the game and therefore give you a more comfortable level of play. Here is a basic glossary for terms used in American Roulette:

Black: An even-money bet on the ball to land on any black number.

Block bet: A type of bet where you place your chips on the intersection of four different numbers, therefore betting on all four numbers at once.

Column bet: A type of bet in roulette where you are betting on one of the bets within a particular column to win. The payout varies according to which bet won.

Double zero: Bet placed on the green 00 number. It is quite hard to win, but pays 35:1 if you do hit on it.

Dozens bet: Bet where you predict that the ball will fall on one of a dozen numbers in a sequential column- 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36. The odds are 2:1 if you win.

Evens: An even-money bet on the ball to land on any one of the even numbers on the table.

Green: Refers to one of two numbers on the wheel that are green- either the 0 or 00.

High: A bet on one of the 'high' numbers on the table to win. High numbers are 19-36.

Inside bet: Name for a particular set of bets. All inside bets are located on the inside of the table that include the boxes for the number bets. The odds vary according to which bet ultimately wins.

Line bet: A 5:1 odds bet that the ball will land on any set of six neighboring numbers on the table.

Low: A roulette bet on all of the 'low' numbers on the table. The word 'low' refers to the numbers 1-28 on the table.

Odd: Name for a bet that the ball will land on any one of the odd numbers on the wheel.

Outside bet: Opposite of the inside bet, this means that you predict that one of the bets on the outside of the table will win. The bets vary and therefore so do the payouts.

Red: A bet that the ball will land on any one of the numbers in red on the wheel.

Six-line bet: A bet for a set of six particular numbers on the table all at once.

Special line bet: A bet on either zero, one two or three to win. It involves putting your chips on the intersecting line of these numbers so that you can bet on all of them at once.

Split bet: A bet on two neighboring numbers on the table. You put your chips on the line between the two so that you can bet on both at once.

Wheel checks: The chips that are used specifically for roulette tables only. There is a different color for each player at the table. They have a value according to what the player wants, and must be bough and cashed out right at the table.

About The Author

J Finney

To learn more about online roulette strategy, please visit http://www.online-gambling-system.com and http://www.online-gambling-system.com/roulette.html
